Director Nominations 2026

Nominations for the AGOSCI Board of Directors are now open and will close on 24 April 2026.

We are seeking 7 to 9 volunteer Directors, who typically serve two-year terms. To establish a rotation cycle, this year only, approximately half of the Directors will serve an initial one-year term, after which all positions will transition to standard two-year terms. The allocation of one- and two-year terms will be determined by the Board at its first meeting.

At the first Board meeting, Directors will also appoint the Chair and Treasurer from among the elected Directors.

What does a Director do?

This is not a passive role. Directors are responsible for governance, strategy and organisational sustainability. This includes:

  • Setting and overseeing strategy and direction

  • Ensuring strong governance and compliance

  • Monitoring financial performance and risk

  • Supporting growth in membership, partnerships and revenue

  • Contributing to the long-term sustainability of AGOSCI

Directors are expected to actively contribute their expertise, ideas and judgement.

Expectations of Directors

Before nominating, please consider whether you can meet the following expectations:

  • Board meetings are held bi-monthly (January, March, May, July, September, November)

    • Typically 90-120 minutes in duration

    • One meeting each year is a longer, strategy-focused session that may be held outside the usual schedule

    • Meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm (SA time)

    • Preparation is required in advance of Board Meetings (reading and contributing to Board documents)

  • Participation in at least one committee or working group, which may meet several times annually in addition to Board meetings

  • Active participation in strategic discussions and decision-making

  • Contribution to organisational priorities, including strategy, partnerships and growth

  • Engagement between meetings as required.

Skills and experience we are seeking

AGOSCI is seeking a skills-based Board to support its next phase of growth.

This year, we are seeking Directors with experience in:

  • Grant funding and submission

  • Fundraising and sponsorships

  • Strategic leadership and organisational growth

  • Governance and Board experience

In line with our Constitution, at least 50% of the Board must be professionals skilled in AAC and/or people with lived experience of AAC

Legal responsibilities of Directors

Directors of AGOSCI have legal duties under Australian law. These include obligations to:

  • Act in good faith and in the best interests of the organisation

  • Exercise due care and diligence

  • Avoid conflicts of interest

  • Ensure the organisation meets its legal and financial obligations

If you are unsure about these responsibilities, please seek advice before nominating.

Is this the right role for you?

If you are looking to:

  • Help shape the future of AAC in Australia

  • Contribute at a strategic and governance level

  • Work alongside a committed and active Board

…then we encourage you to nominate.

If you are more interested in hands-on involvement, community building, or local engagement, you might consider joining a State or Territory branch or the Conference or Fundraising Committee.

Please speak with our Executive Officer if you would like more details about all the available roles.

Nominations and election process

  • Nominations are now open and close on April 24.

  • If nominations exceed available positions, a member vote will be conducted on May 5 at the AGM.

  • If nominations do not exceed the number of positions, nominees will be declared elected.

Further details on the nomination process will be provided to members in the April Newsletter.
