Getting started with

Key Word Sign

Proudly supported by AGOSCI

Key Word Sign helps people communicate and understand what is being said to them. It is a way for someone whose speech is unclear or still developing to get their message across, and is one of the most widely used strategies for people of all ages who cannot communicate by speech alone. The best way to get started with Key Word Sign is to learn from an accredited presenter.

Key Word Sign uses simplified signs from the local deaf sign language, and combines these with speech. It is recommended for anyone who supports children and adults with communication difficulties, such as educators, support workers, therapists and parents.

Our Presenter

My name is Martine Fourie, and I am a Certified Practising Speech Pathologist and a registered Psychologist.  I currently work in private practice as an NDIS registered provider under my business name of Blue Gum Allied Health, and one day a fortnight with the Tasmanian Office of the Senior Practitioner (Department of Communities Tasmania).  I have been privileged to spend my whole career providing services to people with disabilities, as a speech pathologist, a psychologist, a positive behaviour support clinician, a Senior Clinical Consultant (Statewide Behaviour Intervention Service, Family and Community Services NSW) and as a Practice Consultant (Office of the Senior Practitioner, Department of Communities Tasmania).

I have used Key Word Sign for many years now, and became an accredited Key Word Sign Australia (then called Makaton Australia) presenter in 2007.  I really enjoy presenting these interactive, evidence-based workshops and sharing my enthusiasm for Key Word Sign.
