Tech Talkers® is a communication partner training package developed by Rocky Bay speech pathologists. This online 'train the trainer' workshop is designed to upskill others in the delivery the Tech Talkers® package to clients, families, colleagues, and key stakeholders.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Have a greater understanding of AAC and importance of up-skilling communication partners.
  • Have the knowledge to run the Tech Talkers® program for their clients in a group or 1:1 setting.
  • Have the resources required to run the Tech Talkers® program.

Workshop Overview:

  • 3 hour videoconference training session (via MS Teams) with a Rocky Bay Speech Pathologist prior to you running the group.

  • Certificate of training completion

Requirements:

  • Attendance at the full live online workshop is required.
  • This training package is for qualified Speech Pathologists and people who have a high level of interest and experience in AAC. Please contact us to discuss if you are eligible to be a Tech Talkers® presenter.
  • Access to technology to access the workshop via video conference (Microsoft Teams) is required to attend the workshop.

Workshop Dates and Times:

February 25th, 10:00am - 1:00pm*

Registration Price Includes:

  • 1 x 3hour Live Online Training Workshop with the creators, capped at 15 people to ensure time for individual participation; And

  • A full presenter resource package which includes: 
    • 6x PowerPoint presentations (2.25 hour sessions)

    • Presenter scripts for each session

    • Resource Lists for each session

    • Timetable template

    • Information about pre-program session for parents (what to expect etc.)

    • Parent booklet including information from each presentation, home practice sheets, AAC handouts and AAC top tips.

    • Pre-program information sheet

    • Pre-program assessment form (to be completed by therapist)

    • Pre-program parent/carer information form (includes background information about AAC communicator and pre-rating scales to determine knowledge/confidence level of communication partner)

    • Report template (to be completed by therapist at the completion of program)

    • Feedback form including post ratings for comparison

    • Access to updated material as it becomes available

    • Frequently asked workshop questions & answers


About the Presenters:

This workshop is facilitated by Lisa Totten and Leah Cardwell of Rocky Bay, Western Australia.

Lisa is a Speech Pathologist with many years’ experience working with children with disabilities and those using AAC to communicate. Lisa is passionate about helping people to reach their communication potential. She believes that helping communication partners to learn and develop the skills to support AAC communicators is integral to successful outcomes. Lisa has been involved in a number of AAC related projects including an AAC caregiver study at Rocky Bay and development of AAC communication partner resources e.g. Rocky Bay Positive AACtion kit and Techtalkers workshop. Lisa recently presented at the AGOSCI Conference in 2019.

Leah is an Advanced Clinician Speech Pathologist in Complex communication at Rocky bay and has completed post graduate specialisation in Complex Communication needs at Edith Cowan University. She has had over 10 years experience working with people who use AAC as a support worker and a Speech Pathologist. Leah’s passion is to see her clients proving people wrong and exceed the expectations of those around them. Leah is currently involved in projects assisting in making COVID vaccination clinics and DFES (Department of Fire and Emergency) call centres more accessible to people who use AAC.

Cancellations and Refunds

Registration is only confirmed upon full payment of fee. To access discounted rate for members you must be logged into your AGOSCI member account prior to registration. 

Please Note* All registrations incur a 3.5% paypal fee that can't be refunded

  • Full refund (minus paypal fee) until 60 days before event.
  • 50% refund between 8-59 days before event. 
  • No refunds within 0-7 days of event start date.

Applications for registrations are subject to final approval by AGOSCI to ensure fair and equal access to events across organisations. Waitlist registrations will be taken upon all positions being filled.
