What is my body telling me and why does it matter?

Interoception as the foundation for recognizing, understanding, regulating and communicating how you uniquely feel

Presented by Kelly Mahler and Kim Clairy

Interoception is an important sensory system that helps us to feel internal body signals like a full bladder, growling stomach, tense muscles or speeding heart.

Research indicates that our ability to clearly notice and interpret these internal body signals enables us to accurately identify and manage how we feel: Are we Anxious? Getting Frustrated? Hungry? Needing the bathroom?

Many people experience barriers with interoception, but those with complex medical and/or communication needs have additional factors to consider when it comes to recognising, understanding, regulating, and/or communicating how they feel.

This course will provide an overview of what the latest research tells us about interoception as well as first-hand accounts from Kim’s own personal interoception journey as an autistic person.

An evidence- based framework for supporting interoception connection will be shared, including multiple strategies for nurturing the 3 main aspects of interoceptive awareness: body, emotion, action.

Several examples will be shared on how to adapt this framework and strategies to meet a client’s learning, processing, and communication needs.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the connection between interoception and understanding, regulating and communicating how you feel.

  2. Differentiate between body based experiencing and cognitive based supports.
  3. Identify at least 2 strategies to support interoceptive growth in clients of all ages.
  4. Identify at least 1 way each strategy can be adapted to meet a client’s learning and processing needs.
