This presentation will provide an overview of current practice patterns and evidence from research on how speech-language pathologists may approach feeding and swallowing disorders (dysphagia) in adults with developmental disabilities. It will include a discussion of practical tips for clinicians and caregivers alike.
The presentation will explore the variety of factors that influence mealtime safety and independence in this population and how different healthcare professionals and caregivers can support individuals with disabilities to balance preferences and precautions to make mealtimes safe and less stressful.
The speaker will review relevant information about swallow function (physiology), cognition, behaviour, sensation, and the environment as it relates to mealtimes and potential risks for aspiration or choking while eating and drinking.
This presentation will also touch on the topic of aging in individuals with developmental disabilities and discuss identifying and managing changes in feeding and swallowing abilities across the lifespan.

Jen Biener, MS, CCC-SLP
Jen received her Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY, USA and returned to campus in 2018 to complete an Advanced Certification Program in Pediatric Dysphagia. She has extensive experience in dysphagia management, particularly with adults with developmental disabilities, and enjoys supporting clinicians working with this unique population through lectures and social media.
Jen has lectured for undergraduate and graduate dysphagia courses and presented on dysphagia in adults with developmental disabilities at regional and national conferences. Always eager to learn and collaborate, she is a 2-time ASHA ACE Award recipient and member of national and state level associations in her field. She seeks opportunities to support her colleagues in implementing evidence-based dysphagia management and advocate for patient’s quality of life and self-determination through professional outreach and providing mobile swallow studies (FEES) with FEESible Swallow Solutions.
