Why Does "Teen Talk" Matter? The Importance of Peer Relevant Vocabulary

The teen years are an important time in identity formation and relationship development. Think about the words you used as a teen when talking to your friends. There would have been some words in there that you did not use often when talking to adults. This presentation focuses on exploring two areas: what are the TYPES of words that seem to be important in Teen Talk, and why might these words be important when tailoring vocabulary available to teens who use AAC.

Presenter

Karen Wylie is a speech pathologist, and academic at Curtin University. She teaches about multimodal communication to both master's and undergraduate students. 

Co-presenters

Joey Harrall is an AAC mentor and advocate. Joey guest lectures at Curtin University with Karen, teaching speech pathology students about the power of AAC.

Mariah Ingles is a speech pathologist working in a hospital setting. While studying at Curtin, Mariah and Lowri's honours project explored the use of Teen Talk with typically developing adolescents. 

Lowri Cox is a speech pathologist working in a community setting. While studying at Curtin, Mariah and Lowri's honours project explored the use of Teen Talk with typically developing adolescents.
