"Artificial intelligence (AI) could fundamentally reshape alternative and augmentative communication (AAC).”

It’s a statement I’ve been hearing more and more in recent years. At the same time, we’ve seen many technology companies rush to add AI to their products, while most AAC providers have fortunately taken a more cautious and considered approach. Still, AI is gradually finding its way into speech-generating devices as well.

In this webinar, I will explore both the opportunities and the challenges AI brings to AAC, drawing on my own experiences and perspectives as an AAC user. I will focus in particular on AI-assisted message generation and the emergence of new AI-generated synthetic voices.

Please note that this is an English adaptation of my presentation for ISAAC NF, in May 2026.

1. Gain a clear understanding of what AI is, how it works, and the key opportunities and risks associated with it.

2. Explore how AI is being applied within AAC, including AI-assisted message generation and modern synthetic voices.

3. Develop a critical and balanced perspective on the impact of AI on communication, authenticity, privacy, and user autonomy within AAC.

Presenter

Ömer Güney (30) is an AAC user who lives in Belgium. During his birth he had hypoxia and as a result of that he has cerebral palsy. This means that he moves in a powered wheelchair that he is able to control with his right foot and he communicates with an eye gaze enabled speech generating device. He is active as the secretary of the Dutch/Flemish chapter of ISAAC, he participates in a co-research project along with other AAC users and researchers and he is currently preparing to take a course on Social Sciences at UHasselt (a local university).

• 50% refund minus the service fee ($0.69 + 0.7% per transaction) between 8-59 days before event
• No refunds within 0-7 days before event start date
• If the event is cancelled by AGOSCI you will receive 100% refund including the service fee ($0.69 + 0.7% per transaction)
