Achieving successful outcomes for people who use AAC requires identifying their current and desired levels of communicative competence. Assessing skills in multiple environments and with multiple communication partners is essential for both short-term and long-term intervention planning. Knowledge of functioning in all areas of communicative competence supports a shared responsibility for achieving meaningful outcomes.

About the Presenter
Tracy M. Kovach PhD, CCC-SLP
Tracy M. Kovach PhD, CCC-SLP has 30+ years of experience supporting individuals using AAC systems. She has worked in public schools, clinic programs and is the former program director of AAC services at Children’s Hospital Colorado where she developed and directed the Talking with Technology Camp for 25 years.
Dr. Kovach has taught AAC and Related Disabilities courses at the University of Colorado, Metropolitan University of Denver (Colorado), and Adams State University (Colorado), and is a former associate professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (CU Anschutz Medical Campus).
She is the author of The AAC Profile: A Continuum of Learning and co-author of the chapter "Visual Issues and Access to AAC" in Communicative Competence for Individuals who use AAC: From Research to Effective Practice (2003; Light, Beukelman, Reichle, Eds.).
Dr. Kovach has presented at and been involved in the leadership of state, country and international organizations related to speech and language and AAC. She is a twice past president of the United States Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication and Executive Committee and Board member of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication.
Dr. Kovach is an American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Fellow. She lives in Denver, CO USA and is currently in private practice where she works with children who use AAC and their families. She is also a consultant to the Semantic Compaction Systems Company in Pittsburgh, PA.
